The main contributors to microplastics are synthetic textiles and the wear and tear of car tires. Plastic packaging does not contribute to primary microplastics entering the ocean. Microplastics only enter the ocean through improperly disposed plastic waste, among other sources. However, the more plastic packaging is correctly disposed of and recycled, the lower the proportion of secondary microplastics. This is because if plastics are kept in the material cycle, they do not end up in the environment where they decompose into microplastics, and every individual can make an important contribution to this.
